Jasmine Valley - creating opportunities Jasmine Valley is not just accommodation and dining. We are actively concerned with helping Cambodian people in our community, as well as providing opportunities for our employees to develop further potential. Our building program has incorporated a number of alternative building ideas, which have been taken on board by our Cambodian builders. Mud bricks, tile mosaics, wood-fire ovens and the like have been part of the education process.
Our cafe staff have come to us with very little English training and no prior experience. They are working hard at their English classes and learning to serve our customers well. In April 2011, we expect to send our first staff member off to Singapore for six months paid work experience and training. Jasmine Valley has the first Macadamia orchard in Cambodia (that we know of). They're now over a year old, and are very healthy. We'll be growing many more young plants during 2010, which will be made available to people with land but no money. The idea is that we can create employment at a secondary level in a few years, by buying the nuts from them, processing and onselling. Jasmine Valley is currently working towards a coffee enterprise program, using the Presso - a hand cranked espresso machine. Using the Presso and a stove-top frother, coffees such as espressos and cappuccinos will be possible, even in the most remote places. This has the potential to create real independence for some enterprising Cambodian people.
