Solar Power in Jasmine Valley

Jasmine Valley Eco Resort is solar powered. It's completely off the grid. This means we have the sun, which comes up daily, providing enough power to run the resort - restaurants, kitchens, pool lights, room lights and mininal grounds lights. The power collected during the day is stored in big batteries, which then provide power through the night.

Each room is equipped with a single photovoltaic cell, a charge controller and a 100Ah deep cycle battery. This way, all our guests are able to manage their power usage independently. It's pretty easy to manage; the Q's and A's below should have you well prepared.

Q. How does this affect our guests?

A. I'm glad you asked! It means we all need to be a little 'energy conscious'. We almost never go 'lights-out' in our public spaces, but from time to time, guests do have a night by the romantic glow of candles :)

Q. I'm scared of the dark, is there a way I can make sure I have lights all night?

A. Sure, pretty much. In a typical day, there's enough sunlight to charge your room battery with enough electricity to power a light or two all night. If your're careful to turn lights off after you leave the bathroom, and leave only a porch light on when you are out of your room at night, you'll be pretty safe.

Q. Can I charge my phone or laptop?

A. Yes, there is a switched powerpoint in each room. When you turn the switch on, you are activating the inverter (a device that converts the electrical supply to 220 Volts DC). This gives adequate power to charge a laptop, phone or to use a small fan.

Q. What else can I do to make sure I don't have to use a candle?

A. Probably the most common 'misuse' of power, is forgetting to turn the inverter off. So, when you get cold at night, and turn the fan off, you also need to switch it off at the wall. The same goes for charging stuff. When you're not charging, make sure the switch is off, since the inverter will still be wasting power.
